Current Trends and Topics in Data Protection

One of EFDPO’s goals is to create a European network of national associations for the exchange of information, experience and methods, and to improve the quality of training and professional practice.

With this in mind, EFDPO invites privacy professionals from all over Europe to visit the EFDPO Congress on May 9th and 10th, 2023 in Berlin for a comprehensive program focused on the latest developments in data protection. In addition to six sessions with experts from Germany, France, Slovakia and the Czech Republic numerous networking breaks and a festive dinner event will provide ample opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals.

Speakers in Order of Appearance

Thomas Spaeing has been the Chairman of the German Association of Data Protection Officers (BvD) since 2008 and a member of the board of the Association of Independent Professionals (BFB) since 2015. He is also the President of the European Federation of Data Protection Officers (EFDPO) since 2019, which is the European umbrella organization of national professional DPO associations. As the owner of ds2-Unternehmensberatung, he provides data protection advice to banks, institutions and companies, particularly international corporate groups, across various industries. Thomas has a background in Mechanical Engineering and Business Engineering. He completed an internship in Los Angeles as a student worker in the automotive industry and later became certified as a data protection consultant and auditor. Before starting his own company, he held various management positions in the engineering and automotive industries.

Pierre-Yves Lastic is Secretary General of the European Federation of Data Protection Officers (EFDPO). Pierre-Yves has nearly 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in several management functions including Data Management, Statistics, Clinical Trials Management, Electronic Regulatory Submissions, Information Management and 17 years in Privacy and Personal Data Protection. From 2005 on he was Sanofi’s R&D Privacy Offcer and in 2013 he became Sanofi’s fist Chief Privacy Officer and built-up Sanofi’s Global Privacy Office. Beside his function within Sanofi, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) from 2004 to 2016, and Chairman of the Board in 2014-2015. As a data standards and privacy expert, was a member of the EudraVigilance Expert Working Group as well as the Telematics Implementation Group of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). From 2005 to 2019 Dr Lastic was also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Pharmaceutical & Medical devices Privacy Consortium (IPMPC). Pierre-Yves studied Biology, Languages and Computer Sciences in France and Germany, and holds a PhD in Biology from Bayreuth University.

Dr Axel Freiherr von dem Bussche, LL.M. (L.S.E.), CIPP/E, is a partner at Taylor Wessing Axel and a specialist lawyer for information technology law. With his considerable years of experience and outstanding expertise, he routinely guides clients from the technology sector through complex international transactions, contract drafting and regulatory issues. Axel is an accomplished data protection and GDPR expert. He supports corporate groups with the transformation to digital and global business models and also conducts negotiations with the responsible regulatory authorities. Axel has published several works in the field of data protection and cybersecurity, including chapters in the Handbook Industry 4.0 and the Chambers Cybersecurity 2022 Global Practice Guide, as well as articles in magazines such as “Datenschutz-Berater” and the “Zeitschrift für Datenschutz”. He also regularly deliveres webinars and workshops on topics such as data protection regulations, international data transfers, and cybersecurity. Additionally, he has given talks and presentations on the new age of digitization and the impact of the GDPR on the privacy landscape.

Christoph Ritzer is an attorney and Of Counsel at the international business law firm Norton Rose Fulbrigth in Frankfurt. He focuses on information technology, outsourcing and data protection law. Christoph advises clients across a variety of sectors, ranging from start-ups to German DAX 30 groups and US companies. Alongside his focus on financial institutions and the technology sector, he has special expertise in advising the pharmaceutical sector, especially when it comes to handling patient data. Christoph studied law and business at the University of Bayreuth. He then worked as scientific assistant at the University of Wurzburg in EU law, where he also earned his doctorate in law. Prior to joining Norton Rose Fulbright LLP, Christoph worked for several years in the Technology, Media and Telecommunications department of another leading international law firm in Frankfurt. He regularly publishes essays in professional journals and speaks on legal and industry events. He is author of the data protection chapter in “Recent Compliance” („Compliance aktuell”, published by C.F. Müller). He regularly contributes to the practice’s data protection blog, DataProtectionReport.com.

Michal Nulíček is a partner at ROWAN LEGAL, a full service Czech law firm. Michal focuses on legal advice in the field of IT and IP law, in personal data protection, as well as in the field of competition law, compliance and all areas of regulation. Michal also has extensive experience in representing clients before Czech and European courts and regulators. His clients include Czech and international companies from the IT, telecommunications, online services, financial services and energy sectors. Michal is a frequent speaker at local and international conferences, he is the lead author of the first Czech commentary on the GDPR, the commentary on the Czech Personal Data Processing Act (both published by Wolters Kluwer) and co-author of a number of other publications. Michal is a member of IAPP (the International Association for Personal Data Protection) and its KnowledgeNet Chair in Prague. Michal us a certified privacy professional (CIPP/E) and a certified international arbitrator (FCIARrb).

Michael Will is President of the Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision. Michael Will began as a public administrator in Bavaria in 1995 and worked at various departments before becoming head of the Department for Public Safety and Order in Landshut in 2002, where he also led the Association for Rescue Services and Fire Alarm Dispatch. He later returned to the Supreme Building Authority in the Bavarian State Ministry of the Interior in 2006. In 2009, Michael Will was given the leadership of the “Data Protection” department in the Bavarian State Ministry of Sport and Integration. He also served as the official data protection officer and was a member of the Bavarian State Parliament’s data protection commission. On behalf of the Bundesrat, he accompanied the entire discussions of the Council Working Group on Data Protection and Information Exchange (DAPIX) on the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) from 2012 to 2015 and also took on the role of the federal observer in the committee under Art. 93 of the GDPR, which is involved in the adoption of adequacy decisions by the European Commission, among other things.

Dr. Kai-Uwe Loser (Germany)

Dr Kai-Uwe Loser is experienced data protection specialist with a background in computer science. He holds a diploma in computer science and a PhD in natural sciences from the University of Dortmund, and is also a certified data protection auditor. In his professional career, Kai-Uwe has taken on multiple key roles in data protection, including serving as the official data protection officer for both the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Duisburg-Essen. In addition, he is Deputy chairman of the German Association of Data Protection Officers (BvD). Kai-Uwe Loser has published several works in the field of socio-technical systems, electronic learning platforms, and software engineering. His research focuses on the integration of knowledge management and computer-supported cooperation in projects, as well as the development of data privacy-compliant e-learning platforms. Additionally, he has published works on the support of the adoption of commercial standard software and the modeling of service processes from a socio-technical perspective.

Spiros Tassis, LLM is an independent lawyer/legal advisor with more than 17 years of substantive knowledge and PQE in advising entities activated in the TMT/ICT market, either as a corporate lawyer or as an external consultant. He is admitted at the Bar of Athens (Supreme Court) and specialized in IT and Privacy Law since 1999. He is an Associate of the Laboratory of Law and Informatics (LLI) of the Law School-University of Athens, Chairman of the Hellenic Association of Data Protection and Privacy (HADPP) and co-chair of the Greek Knowledge Chapter of IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals). Key points of his career are: being Head Corporate Legal Adviser to Cosmoline S.A. (ICT regulations, data protection and network security, antitrust, IP etc.), Corporate Legal Adviser in Vodafone Greece, where he gained substantial experience and great exposure to multinational aspects of telecommunications law, DP, privacy and network security and antitrust and Senior Associate for a big ticket law firm in Athens. Spiros is offering external advice, as an independent lawyer, to entities activated mainly as tech and internet startups, to ICT stakeholders, to online gambling, to entities activated in energy etc. Spiros is also an Editor of the “Media and Telecommunications Law Review” since 2005, covering the TMT and Data Protection Law. He is co-author of various books and regularly publishes articles related to ICT and privacy and annotations on the CJEU and national case law.

Dr. Pavol Szabó (SPOOU) EFDPO Slovakia

JUDr Pavol Szabo, LL.M., an Attorney at Law at GHS Legal, a law firm that provides legal services to local and international clients. He focuses on commercial law, information technology law, as well as on various aspects of personal data protection. His attention is also dedicated to land law, rights relating to personality and various issues of constitutional and European law. He provides legal services especially to developers and companies in the field of information technologies. Pavol is deputy Chairman of the Slovak Data Protection Association (Spolku pre ochranu osobných údajov) as well as board member of the European Federation of Data Protection Officers (EFDPO).
