Current Trends and Topics in Data Protection
One of EFDPO’s goals is to create a European network of national associations for the exchange of information, experience and methods, and to improve the quality of training and professional practice.
With this in mind, EFDPO invites privacy professionals from all over Europe to visit the EFDPO Congress on May 28th and 29th, 2024 in Berlin for a comprehensive program focused on the latest developments in data protection. In addition to six sessions with experts from different countries numerous networking breaks and a festive dinner event will provide ample opportunity to connect with like-minded professionals.

Welcome Speakers
Thomas Spaeing has been the Chairman of the German Association of Data Protection Officers (BvD) since 2008 and a member of the board of the Association of Independent Professionals (BFB) since 2015. He is also the President of the European Federation of Data Protection Officers (EFDPO) since 2019, which is the European umbrella organization of national professional DPO associations. As the owner of ds2-Unternehmensberatung, he provides data protection advice to banks, institutions and companies, particularly international corporate groups, across various industries. Thomas has a background in Mechanical Engineering and Business Engineering. He completed an internship in Los Angeles as a student worker in the automotive industry and later became certified as a data protection consultant and auditor. Before starting his own company, he held various management positions in the engineering and automotive industries.
Pierre-Yves Lastic is Secretary General of the European Federation of Data Protection Officers (EFDPO). Pierre-Yves has nearly 30 years of experience in the pharmaceutical industry in several management functions including Data Management, Statistics, Clinical Trials Management, Electronic Regulatory Submissions, Information Management and 17 years in Privacy and Personal Data Protection. From 2005 on he was Sanofi’s R&D Privacy Offcer and in 2013 he became Sanofi’s fist Chief Privacy Officer and built-up Sanofi’s Global Privacy Office. Beside his function within Sanofi, he was a member of the Board of Directors of the Clinical Data Interchange Standards Consortium (CDISC) from 2004 to 2016, and Chairman of the Board in 2014-2015. As a data standards and privacy expert, was a member of the EudraVigilance Expert Working Group as well as the Telematics Implementation Group of the European Medicines Agency (EMA). From 2005 to 2019 Dr Lastic was also a member of the Board of Directors of the International Pharmaceutical & Medical devices Privacy Consortium (IPMPC). Pierre-Yves studied Biology, Languages and Computer Sciences in France and Germany, and holds a PhD in Biology from Bayreuth University.
Dr. Gwendal Le Grand is the Head of activity for enforcement support and coordination at the European data protection board (EDPB) since October 2021. He is particularly involved in the Coordinate d Enforcement Framework (CEF), and the Support Pool of Experts (SPE) which aims to assist national supervisory authorities in their investigations and enforcement activities of significant common interest. Before joining the EDPB, he worked at the French Data Protection Authority, CNIL (Commission Nationale de l’Informatique et des Libertés), as Deputy Secretary-General (2019-2021), Director of technology and innovation (2014-2019) and Head of the IT experts department (2007-2014), with a specific focus on new technologies, information security, digital transformation, ethics, and international affairs.
Spiros Tassis is an independent lawyer/legal advisor with more than 17 years of substantive knowledge and PQE in advising entities activated in the TMT/ICT market, either as a corporate lawyer or as an external consultant. He is admitted at the Bar of Athens (Supreme Court) and specialized in IT and Privacy Law since 1999. He is an Associate of the Laboratory of Law and Informatics (LLI) of the Law School-University of Athens, Chairman of the Hellenic Association of Data Protection and Privacy (HADPP) and co-chair of the Greek Knowledge Chapter of IAPP (International Association of Privacy Professionals). Key points of his career are: being Head Corporate Legal Adviser to Cosmoline S.A. (ICT regulations, data protection and network security, antitrust, IP etc.), Corporate Legal Adviser in Vodafone Greece, where he gained substantial experience and great exposure to multinational aspects of telecommunications law, DP, privacy and network security and antitrust and Senior Associate for a big ticket law firm in Athens. Spiros is offering external advice, as an independent lawyer, to entities activated mainly as tech and internet startups, to ICT stakeholders, to online gambling, to entities activated in energy etc. Spiros is also an Editor of the “Media and Telecommunications Law Review” since 2005, covering the TMT and Data Protection Law. He is co-author of various books and regularly publishes articles related to ICT and privacy and annotations on the CJEU and national case law.
Tilman Herbrich is an experienced lawyer with expertise in data protection, technology, and competition law at Spirit Legal since 2019 and has been a partner of the firm since 2023. He advises technology companies on data privacy, IT law, and competition matters, and has a strong background in privacy litigation. Before joining Spirit Legal, he worked in the legal department of a leading e-commerce textile company and as a research assistant at the University of Leipzig, where he is currently pursuing a Ph.D. on the topic of data protection in social media advertising. He is a Certified Information Privacy Professional/Europe (CIPP/E) and is active in both academia and publishing. He contributes to the “Datenschutz-Berater” journal, teaches at the DeutscheAnwaltAkademie, and is involved with the DFG Research Training Group “Privacy and Digitalisation” at the University of Passau.
Erwin Rigter is the Managing Director at Privacy Company, which operates under the motto “Making Data Protection Easy.” The company provides consulting, training and software solutions aimed at building a privacy-friendly and secure corporate culture. Their experienced team helps organizations efficiently comply with and maintain the standards of the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
Erwin has also authored a book titled “European Privacy Regulation: General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) for Privacy Professionals.” This pocket guide is designed for privacy professionals and covers essential aspects of GDPR. It includes introductions to European courts, recitals, fact sheets, and a convenient index. The book, known as “Captain Privacy,” addresses common misunderstandings about the GDPR, summarizes articles in tweet-length texts, and highlights crucial sections along with potential fines. This guide serves as an invaluable, easily accessible reference that has been widely appreciated in the privacy community.
