Seminar “American and European approach to data protection, unified vs. fragmented regulation”

On 22 March 2022, the Czech Data protection Association and the International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) organized an online seminar on the future of personal data protection and privacy from the US and European Union perspectives. In the first part of the event, which was attended by more than 60 participants, spoke Julian Flamant (Hogan Lovels, Washington D.C., USA) about U.S. approach to Data Protection. The European approach and its advantages and disadvantages were presented by Christoph Bausewein (Nickel Rechtsanwälte, Hanau, Germany). Michal Nulíček (Rowan Legal, Prague, Czech Republic) then introduced a Czech perspective and current data protection issues. In the second part, Soňa Matochová (Czech DPA) spoke on the current topic, presenting a guidelines on the rights of data subjects, František Nonnemann (Czech Data protection Association) pointed out some problematic interpretations of the basic concepts of GDPR and Jan Tomíšek ( Rowan Legal), addressed the Privacy paradox and data subjects’ expectations. At the end, a panel discussion followed with the participation of lecturers and Tomáš Rychlý, a judge of the Czech Supreme Administrative Court.
